BY E. B. CRISMAN, D. D.

Virtuous and wise he was, but not severe,
He still remembered that he once was young:
His easy presence checked no decent joy.

PREFACE.

I HAVE three objects in publishing this series of books: First, It is a well known fact that mankind read biographies with more avidity than they do any other class of reading matter. I wish to utilize this fact, and thus promote the taste for reading in our Church. Second, To afford the young men of our Church easy access to examples of Christian piety and labor worthy of imitation. Third, To preserve for the future historian a great deal of our denominational history, which might otherwise be lost.

Other volumes will follow this in rapid succession. [No other volumes were ever published.]

Whoever will read these volumes will be entertained and greatly profited. They who will not read, could not receive profit from books, though the world were full of them of the best character.

E. B. CRISMAN.
