THEOLOGY

This department was established in 1908, and is maintained by the Board of Education of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with Rev. P. F. Johnson, Dean of the department.

Arrangements have been made with the Board of Trustees of Bethel College by which all students preparing for the ministry in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church are to be admitted to the classes in the collegiate department on the payment of the contingent fee, which is two dollars per term of five months, thus giving them every advantage of a thorough collegiate course and at the same time the theological training necessary for usefulness in the ministry.

While it is desired that candidates for the Theological Course be Latin, Greek, and Hebrew scholars, still we find many consecrated men and women, whom God has called into the ministry or some other work in his kingdom, who are not classical scholars. These should be trained, and it is not ours to refuse them admittance to such classes in this department as will be helpful to them in winning souls. Accordingly, all who so desire may enter the classes; but only those who make the required grades in all the studies will be graduated.

The course of study in this department is as follows:

I. English Bible--i. Inspiration. 2. History. 3. Analysis of the books of the Old and the New Testaments.

II. Church History--1. General Church History. 2. History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

III. Systematic Theology, as outlined by Beard, Burrow, and Blake.

IV. Confession of Faith, Catechism, and Government of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

V. Comparative Study of Creeds.

VI. The Preparation and the Delivery of Sermons.

VII. New Testament Greek. One year.

VIII. Hebrew. One year in the Old Testament.

Probationers for the ministry who have not completed the equivalent of at least a high school course will receive instruction in the English Bible, Confession of Faith, and the Government of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, together with such other subjects as they may be prepared to study.
