Edwards Gray McLean

Cumberland Presbyterian Minister

Presbyterian Minister [1907-1916]

c1846 - 1916

REV. E. G. McLEAN, D.D.

Rev. Edwards Gray McLean, of San Antonio, Texas, is a native of Kentucky. He is the youngest son of the Hon. Finis Ewing McLean, for many years a congressman from that state, and a grandson of Rev. Ephraim McLean, the first minister ordained in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. One of his great-grandfathers was Capt. William Byars, of North Carolina, a soldier of the Revolution, who lost a leg at the battle of Cowpens.

Dr. McLean was rearer under the pastoral oversight, and prepared for college under the tuition of Rev. J. M. Gill, D.D., his spiritual father, to whom, aside from his own mother, he owes more than to any other for the success of his life. he completed his theological course at Cumberland University in the class of 1870, with Rev. W. C. Denson and Rev. W. J. Darby, and graduated in law in Washington and Lee University in Virginia, and is at present a member of the supreme bar of two states.

When still quite young, Dr. McLean entered the ministry as associate pastor of the Court Street Church at Memphis, Tenn., with Rev. L. C. Ransom of sainted memory. He afterwards built, and was for four years pastor of the Vance Street Church of that city.

In 1874 he went to California, where he organized and built the church at Merced, remaining its pastor for thirteen years. Without any guarantee of salary or help from either board or patron, he founded this church with less than a dozen members, and within a year he dedicated free from debt the handsome edifice still standing and had nearly one hundred members on the church roll.

In 1887 he accepted a call to Walla Walla, Washington (then a territory), where he remained six years. He was married in the meantime to Miss Sadie Russell, of Stockton, Cal. In 1892 he was called to the pastorate at Evansville, Ind., where he remained until 1897, when he moved to San Antonio, Texas, and became pastor of the Avenue "D" Church. Within thirty days after his arrival he had consolidated the two churches of that city, which were sadly divided, and organized Grace Church.

In 1900 Dr. McLean resigned this delightful pastorate and accepted the agency of the "Million Dollar Endowment Fund" in behalf of Trinity University, raising in cash and notes $58,000 in sixteen months. In October last he began evangelistic work in which he has been greatly blessed and used of the Lord.

Dr. McLean was moderator of the General Assembly in 1890, and during that year his alma mater at Lebanon conferred upon him the degree of D.D. In his ministry he has had charge of five pastorates, in the meantime building or remodeling four churches, raising for the cause of God more than one hundred thousand dollars, aside from the Endowment Fund, and receiving into the communion more than a thousand members. His career has been an active one, his attention being given to work among the people as pastor rather than to studious pursuits.
