1857
On motion, an opportunity was given to any persons present to converse with Presbytery upon their internal call to the work of the Gospel Ministry: whereupon Bros. A. D. Manning and H. R. Crockett, the former a member of Shiloh congregation, and the latter of Mt. Moriah congregation, came forward and gave a relation of their experience as christians and of their impressions to preach the gospel. After due deliberation, they were received under the care of this Presbytery, as candidates for the Gospel Ministry, and each of them is hereby required to prepare a written discourse to be read at our next regular session, from the following texts of Scripture: Bro. Manning from Rom. 1st-16, and Bro Crockett from Heb. 4th, 9. (March 20, 1857)

Bros. A. D. Manning, H. R. Crockett and J. Smith, (candidates) being called upon, read discourses from texts previously assigned them, the consideration of which was postponed for the present.
On motion, the discourses read by Bros. Crockett, Manning and Smith (candidates for the ministry) were considered, and sustained as parts of trial, and each ordered to prepare a written discourse to be read at the next regular session of Presbytery; Bro. Crockett from Eph. 6-13, Bro. Manning from Rev. 12-17, and Bro. Smith from Heb. 2, and 1st clause of 3rd verse.

On motion, Bro. Manning (candidate) read a discourse from a text previously assigned him, which was sustained as popular previous to licensure.
On motion, ordered that Bro. A. D. Manning preach on the Roanoke circuit until the first of September next.
At. Chariton Church Macon County Mo., on the 4th day of April, A.D. 1859, the Presbytery of McGee having received testimonials in favor of Bro. A. D. Manning, of his good moral character, of his being in the communion of the church, proceed to take the usual parts of trial for his licensure. And he having given satisfaction as to his aptness to teach, as to his experimental acquaintance with religion, as to his internal call to the work of the ministry, and as to his proficiency in Divinity, the Presbytery did and do hereby express their approbation of all these parts of trial. And he, having adopted the Confession of Faith of this church, and satisfactorily answered the questions appointed to be put to candidates to be licensed, the Presbytery did and do hereby license him, the said A. D. Manning to preach the Gospel of Christ, as a probationer for the Holy Ministry, within the bounds of this Presbytery, or wherever God in His Providence may cast his lot.

The Presbytery then listened to the ordination sermon by Bro. Mitchell, from 1st Cor. 3-6. After which Bros. H. R. Crockett and A. D. Manning, having answered in the affirmative the questions to be put to probationers for the ministry, previous to ordination, Presbytery did by prayer and the imposition of hands, set apart the said brethren to the whole work of the ministry. Bro Dysart being absent Bro. Freeman presided and gave the charge. A hymn was sung and the congregation dismissed with the usual benediction. (October 14, 1860)

He graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1861.


"Lieut. A. D. Manning, a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a most exemplary Christian, is among the killed."

He died June 27, 1864 a the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War.
