Father of Mrs. Roy Grace of Kahoka, and former pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Medill, died at his home in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, January 23, 1941, at the age of 72 years, 10 months, and 8 days.
He was stricken with a light stroke of paralysis January 6. Uremic poisoning followed, and death soon came. Thus was closed a long, faithful service in the vineyard of the Master.
Robert Lee Layman, son of Anthony and Rachel Kimble Layman, was born at Millwood, Grayson County, Kentucky, March 15, 1868. He prepared for the ministry at Lebanon college and joined Leitchfield Presbytery, Kentucky Synod, in 1888. The early part of his ministry was in southeast Missouri, and two years were spent in southeast Iowa. He moved to Medill, Missouri, in 1913, and was pastor of the Medill Cumberland Presbyterian church until 1926. His next charge was at Huntsville, but for the past three years he had been in retirement at Excelsior Springs, preaching only occasionally, with no regular appointment. His ministry covered a period of 53 years.
On September 24, 1891, he married Miss Mattie Leona Thompson of Lewisburg, Kentucky, who passed away August 24, 1920.
To this union were born two children.
On April 19, 1922, he married Mrs. Elma C. Grableman of Bloomfield, Iowa, who survives him.
Other survivors are : a son J. L. Layman, Berkeley, California; a daughter, Mrs. R. M. Grace of Kahoka, and six grandchildren; Dorothy Lois and Robert W. Layman of Berkeley, California; Mrs. Virginia Irvin, Howard, Robert, and John Franklin Grace of Kahoka; also four sisters: Rev. Mrs. L. M. Woosley, Lexington, Kentucky; Mrs. Ida Williams, Millwood, Kentucky; Mrs. Dora Likens, Louisville, Kentucky, and Mrs. Malissa Covert of Aberdeen, Washington, and two brothers: George E. Layman of Dexter, Missouri, and Hardin T. Layman of Aberdeen, Washington.
Funeral services were held at the Cumberland Presbyterian church in Medill, Sunday, January 26, at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. L. B. Owens of near Moberly.
The burial was in Kahoka Cemetery.
