The funeral services of Mrs. Mary Greer Massey, widow of John
Massey, were held on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Cumberland
Presbyterian church by the Revs. S. H. Eshman, of Pulaski, Tenn.,
former pastor, Charles W. Welch, pastor of the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian
church, Louisville, Ky., and J.
H. Zwingle, pastor of the local church. The church was
crowded with relatives and friends. The remarks of the three ministers
were in keeping with the Christian life of Mrs. Massey. There
were many beautiful floral designs and flowers. The burial was
in Fairview cemetery by the side of her husband, who died about
fifteen years ago. The following gentlemen served as pall-bearers:
J. Whit Potter, T. W. Posey, A. Y. Patterson, H. H. Denhardt,
Charles Drake, George H. Galloway, James McLean and Charles L.
Goodrum.

February 15, I was saddened beyond words when I received a telegram from Mrs. Clay announcing the passing of her mother the night before, February 14. The next morning's train carried me to Bowling Green to be present at the last sad rites. Life holds many rich experiences for each of us, and I count myself privileged to have been with Mrs. Massey's family at this time, for their Christian fortitude was very wonderful, and they had the peace that passeth understanding in their very great grief.
Mrs. Massey had been my very dear friend for a number of years; for I, as all who came within her radius, knew her only to love her. Her life was a shining example of Christian womanhood. Her sincerity, gentleness, and graciousness made her an example for emulation. With each passing year she ripened more perfectly for the final plucking, and when I last saw her, her saintly readiness was very evident to the human eye.
Hers was a life of richness--of giving and loving. She retained her interest in all things, especially "her Church." Nothing was too small to receive her consideration, and she was vitally concerned in the splendid services her devoted daughters, Mrs. Goodrum and Mrs. Clay, have rendered our denomination and encouraged them in all of their efforts by her prayers and advice, and who knows but that much of their accomplishments are due to "mother?"
As in life so in death Mrs. Massey was beautiful--a fitting type of the beauty of soul she possessed and of the heaven she reached.
Mrs. Massey was rich in loving and in being loved; for her two daughters, two sons, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and grandson lavished such a wealth of love and thoughtfulness upon her. "Mother" was first with each and surely no person could have been more cherished.
All that skill, science, and tender hands could do to prolong the stay here was done, but she was ready and slipped home--weary and well content to go.
Rev. S. H. Eshman, a former beloved pastor, came from Florida to conduct, the services at Bowling Green, assisted by our pastor, Rev. J. H. Zwingle, and Rev. Welch, of Louisville, a life-long friend. On Wednesday, February 16, she was laid to rest under a mound of lovely flowers, expressions of the loving sympathy of a host of grieved friends.
To her children our hearts go out with a great yearning to comfort in these hours of sadness, when the sorrow is yet so keen but his grace is sufficient for them.
"Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me;
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea."Twilight and even bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
When I embark."For tho' from out the bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to meet my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar."
