To Be Continued
The first recorded action, leading up to the establishment
of the Virtue Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was on February
8, 1887, when "A meeting was held to consider the need for
a building for educational and religious purposes." At this
meeting it was agreed that "At present no church organization
be allowed the use of the building, and that religious services
be controlled by a Board of Trustees to be selected." A site
offered by J. M. Montgomery was agreed upon. "On the South
side of the old Loudon Road about 200 yards West of A. Galbraith,
provided a sufficient title be made in due time." Committees
were appointed "To secure an estimate of cost to solicit
funds, and to confer with Tenth District School Board." The
reports of committees were received at subsequent meetings and
on March 19, 1887, general plans and specifications were agreed
upon and a building committee selected and authorized to "
Ascertain if funds in prospect were sufficient to justify beginning
construction, and if so to proceed with the work."
The original Board of Trustees selected at this meeting was composed of the following: E. M. Campbell, W. T. McFee, J. M. Montgomery, W. J. Lee, and R. Jones. The name "Prospect Chapel," was agreed upon at this meeting and the deed to the property read, a slight change being proposed--a foot path easement was to be granted across by J. M. Montgomery's barn and along the line between his property and that of W. T. Smith to the railroad for the term of twenty years. This deed was formally received at a meeting of the Trustees on November 1, 1887.
The next available record is from the Minutes of the Board of Trustees, May 28, 1892, a part of which reads "Resolved that we grant an organization of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church the use of the Prospect Chapel one fourth (1/4) time." It was about this time that the name was changed from Prospect Chapel to Virtue Church.
Those ministers serving during the early years were: Reverends S. B. West, David Kerr, Rev. W. R. Dunlap, Charles Everett, Henry Dyer, John Conner, S. S. Neely, and D. C. Hoyle. Among the Pioneer families composing the early Membership were: the Montgomerys, Lees, Campbells, Gounds, McFees, Mismers, Galbraiths, Jones, Hayes, Dunlaps, Hobbs, and Findleys.
Pastors from 1909 to 1954 were:
Rev. George Boatman 1909-1914

Rev. W. F. Patch 1915-1921
