THE UNION CITY CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

The Union City Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in 1858 by Rev. Joe McLesky and C. W. McBride, with E. B. Lovelace, J. T. Brown, and J. S. Whitsett as Ruling Elders.

The Church was disbanded on account of the Civil War, but was reorganized in 1866. Ruling elders at that time were E. B. Lovelace, J. T. Brown, J. w. Whitsett, and F. W. Matthews. During the first fifty years after its organization the church was served by twenty pastors.

The first church house was a frame building erected in 1867. It was a substantial building 40 feet by 65 feet in dimension facing eastward, built on brick pillars, with a dome or tower 12 feet in diameter and 15 feet high. Above this was a conical spire extending 20 feet higher, with a weather vane surmounting its pinnacle. The building had ten Gothic windows and was some 55 to 60 feet in total heights. These details are from written agreement signed by W. C. Vance and J. B. Brown, builders, dated June 3rd, 1867.

In 1892 a very beautiful brick structure was erected on the southwest corner of Church and Home Streets, replacing the old frame building. The architect for the construction of the new church was John Carter and the contractor and builder was J. J. Dugan. Both of these men died before the building was finished. One of the elders, T. J. Harvey, took over responsibility of finishing it. Rev. J. A. McDonald was pastor at the time and the church was built at a cost of $12,000.00. By 1896, the membership had grown from less than 50, when organized, to 250 members.

On March 23, 1927, the beautiful church constructed in 1892 was destroyed by a fire. The fire was so severe that none of the records were saved and very little of the church furniture could be removed before the roof of the church collapsed. Immediately after the fire, under the leadership and direction of the pastor, Rev. W. B. Cunningham, and with the full cooperation of the membership, plans were made for the construction of the present church building. In 1928, the beautiful buff brick building now used by the church was erected on the foundation of the old church. The architects were Tisdale, Stone and Pinson of Nashville; the contractors were Hill and Merryman of Fulton, Kentucky.

In a 1955 building program the old manse was removed to make room for the new educational building, the grounds landscaped, and a parking lot built in the rear of the church. In addition to major change and improvements in the basement and entrances to the church, the two-story educational building was constructed. This beautiful masonry constructed building provides Sunday School class and departmental rooms, pastor's study, offices, and includes a beautiful chapel.

The committee of the Church Session and Deacons directing the construction of the Educational Building and improvements to the church were: Fenner Heathcock, Chairman; James L. Rippy, and Preston Warren from the Church Session; Edwin Crenshaw from the Board of Deacons; and Rev. Cordis M. Womack as pastor and member exofficio.

In 1957 the present manse of High Street located to the rear of the church property was purchased. The Rev. Maury Norman moved into this beautiful brick residence that was ideally located for use as a manse.

Since the church records previous to 1927 were destroyed when the church burned, the names of many faithful church officials recorded in the former records are not included in this sketch.

The pastor in 1983 is the Rev. Donald Caperton; organist, Leah Jean Moss; and choir director, Evalyn Campbell.
