"Fayetteville Church. On motion, the following preamble and resolution were adopted. Whereas the members of the C.P. Church in this place had, in the peculiar providence of God, been greatly afflicted in the loss of their private dwellings and house of worship, which were demolished by the tornado; And Whereas they are strugling with a debt incurred in rebuilding their sanctuary. Therefore Resolved that the missionary collection to be lifted here to night be taken in aid of this congregation, in payment of their debt for their church edifice; And that the Board of Missions of this Presbytery be instructed so to apply it."

Great success blessed this meeting and an organization of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville was accomplished the same year. Rev. S. M. Cowan was the first pastor, continuing many years, and under him the church multiplied in numbers and strengthened in good work. Subsequent ministers have been Herschel S. Porter, W. D. Chaddick, D. D. , Stokely Chaddick, S. M. Cowan, again M. B. DeWitt, ____McElree, Nat Powers, C. P. Duvall, ____ McDonald and J. S. Weaver. Among the first members were Benjamin Clements and wife, William Norris and wife, Benjamin Wear and wife, S. O. Griffs and wife, George Stonebraker and wife, Jacob Stonebraker and wife and Dr. Charles McKinney and wife.

C. C. McKinney, attorney at law and magistrate of District No. 8 of Lincoln County, Tenn., was born where he now resides, in 1828. His father, Dr. Charles McKinney, was of Scotch-Irish extraction, and was born in Wayne County, Ky., in 1788, and educated at Center College, Danville, Ky., where he also read medicine. He married Mary Russell in 1810, and came to
Lincoln County, Tenn., in 1812, being one of the pioneer settlers and physicians of the county. His visits to the sick were made by following the old Indian trails and foot-paths, and he was known far and near as a man possessed of remarkable intelligence and honesty. He was surgeon in the war of 1812, and died in 1864 full of years. The mother was of direct Scotch descent, born in 1790. She died in 1863. They were the parents of fourteen children, only three of whom are now living. Our subject's
paternal and maternal grandparents were born in Ireland and Scotland, respectively, and both were early emigrants to America. C. C. McKinney received an academical education, and in 1850 became a disciple of Blackstone, Hon. James Fulton being his preceptor. He was admitted to the bar in 1851, and has since practiced his profession, and regarded as a successful, earnest advocate and safe counselor. He was in partnership in the practice of law two years with W. B. Martin, and thirteen years with F. P. Fulton. In August, 1885, Mr. McKinney was elected magistrate of his district, and yet holds that position. He has always resided in Fayetteville, and has displayed qualities of head and heart which have enabled him to surmount many difficulties. He is a Democrat, but previous to the war was a Whig. He is also a Mason. In June, 1856, he married Ellen Dennis, born in Alabama, in July, 1837. They have two children: James D., who is the pharmacist in W. A. Gill's drug store, in
Fayetteville, and Charles F., who is salesman in the dry good store of J. A. Lumpkin. Mr. and Mrs. McKinney are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Christmas Sunday--December 21--is a notable day for Cumberland Presbyterians in Fayetteville, Tennessee, with the formal dedication of a new church plant.

The pastor, Wayne Wiman, is in charge of the dedication services. The morning service includes a sermon of dedication by C. Ray Dobbins; the act of dedication will be in a 2:30 P.M. service with open house to follow.

Special activities began on Sunday, November 30, when the congregation held its concluding service and said good-bye to its old downtown property. The following Sunday the 580-member congregation held opening services in the new church plant at 1015 Petersburg Highway, at the north edge of town, on a 25-acre site.

The following Sunday ordination and installation of elders and deacons was held. They include Thomas U. Riggins, F. E. Campbell, Ed Chapman, and Thomas H. Stevenson, elders; Conroy Sawyers, James Marlon Tucker, Butler Campbell, Billy Roland, and William Knox Moore, Jr., deacons.

The 140-year Fayetteville congregation dates its beginning to 1829 when the local paper said: "The meeting lasted forty days and over 1,000 people were converted." Rev. Robert Donnell and Rev. S. M. Cowan conducted the "protracted meeting."

The first house of worship was "on the bluff north of the mouth of Norris Creek," which was destroyed by a storm in 1851. The second building was erected at the downtown site, 208 South Elk Avenue, in 1852. It was used as a hospital during the Civil War. After forty years of use this building was removed and a third sanctuary erected and this has been in use for the past 75 years. This plant is being rented to Lincoln County for a temporary court house while a new one is under construction.

Former pastors invited for the dedication services include: H. L. Hinch, Greenville, Ill., 1920-22; (J. W. Stiles, recently deceased, 1922-23); S. T. Byars, Elizabethtown, Ky., 1923-28; H. J. Burroughs, Jasper, Tenn., 1928-35; H. R. Robinson, Birmingham, Ala., 1935-47; C. M. Womack, Louisville, Ky., 1947-53; L. P. Looper, Columbia, Tenn., 1953-59. Wayne Wiman has served the congregation since October 1959.

ONE MORE LIGHT ON A HILL:

Fayetteville, Tenn., church dedication

"A visible church . . . set on a hill" describes the new Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, Tenn. which was dedicated with special services on Christmas Sunday, December 21.

After having been located just off the town square for seventy-five years, the congregation moved to a 25-acre site north of town on the Petersburg Highway which is on the highest hill in town.

The services of dedication were conducted by the pastor of eleven years, Dr. Wayne Wiman.

"God's gifts to us--our gifts to him," was the subject of the dedicatory sermon delivered at the morning hour by Dr. C. Ray Dobbins editor of THE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERIAN.

"Many times in the church we quibble over little miracles," the speaker said. "What are the small miracles compared with the great miracle: that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself--that God came into our world in human flesh in Jesus of Nazareth--that he favored us by making this the visited planet?"

Among man's gifts to God mentioned were that the church be permitted to be a community of love--a redemptive fellowship to celebrate the sacraments in their fullest meaning; and "not merely go to church, but seek to be the church."

In the afternoon Pastor Wiman led the formal act of dedication of the new church.

"Bless This Church" was sung by Ed Chapman and the prayer dedication was given by the moderator of Tennessee Synod, Rev. David Brown.

Pastor Wiman spoke of the privilege of this "once in a lifetime experience" for him in building of a church. Members of the building committee were presented: J. W. Tallman, chairman, Lindsey Howell, Charles D. Manley, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Taylor, Conroy Sawyers, Dodge Old, James Marlin Tucker, and Carmen Gibson.

The chairman of the refreshment committee during the fellowship hour following the service was Sue Riggins.

The church had opened the cornerstone of the old church plant during the previous week and found many items reflecting the life and times of 1895. Among items included were newspapers, both local and statewide, hymnal, Confession of Faith, a church paper, and numerous other items.

This moved the church to preserve in the cornerstone of the new building a large collection of items reflecting life and times of 1969.
