The Presbytery met at the Ridge
meeting-house, on the second Wednesday in October, 1811,
agreeably to adjournment.

Samuel Crockett, Hugh Telford, Hugh Roan, and Robert Kirkpatrick.
Representatives--James Hucheson,
from McAdow; David Robeson, from the Boyling Fork society; Dennis
Dunham, from Union and Gasper River societies; Reuben Bedwell,
from Harpeth Licks, Pisgah, Rock Creek, and West Harpeth societies;
William Young, from Kelly's Creek, Norrises Creek, and Indian
Creek societies; Spence Mitchel from Union, Zion, and Concord
societies.
Presbytery was opened
by a discourse delivered by Mr.
David McLin from Luke XIII, 5, assigned to him by last
Presbytery, which was sustained.
Presbytery
proceeded to appoint a moderator and clerk, whereupon Mr.
Thomas Calhoon was chosen Moderator, Mr. David
Foster, Clerk.
Mr.
James B. Porter now came and took his seat.
William
Johnston, a representative from the united societies of Little
Bigby, Litle's Creek, Robertson's Fork, Globe Creek, and Rock
Creek, took his seat.
Benjamin
Lockhart, a representative from Liberty congregation, came and
took his seat.
The Presbytery
having had the petition from the people from the mouth of Green
River, on the Ohio, under consideration, unanimously agree that
Messrs. McLean,
Harris,
and Chapman,
and whoever rides the lower circuit, do each one in their turn,
visit said people once before our next Presbytery.
Upon
inquiry being made of Messrs. McGee
and Ewing
what books they purchased in compliance with the order of last
Presbytery, they report as follows:

Presbytery adjourned by prayer to meet to-morrow morning, nine o'clock.
THURSDAY MORNING,
October 10, 1811.
Presbytery
met agreeably to adjournment. Opened with prayer. Members present
as yesterday.
The Presbytery
having, by their committee, last session examined Philip
McDaniel [sic: McDonnold] on experimental religion and;
his call to the work of the ministry, which was satisfactory,
and having received a good report of his moral character, at the
same time having recommended him to go to school, which it appears
he has done, and from his attention to study has made good progress,
which encourages the Presbytery to resolve therefore, that said
McDaniel
[sic: McDnnold] be received, and henceforth considered a candidate
for the ministry, and that he prepare a discourse from Revelation
III, 20, to be delivered at our next Presbytery; and as the Presbytery
wish to give a proper countenance to literature when it can be
obtained, they do hereby request said McDaniel
[sic: McDonnold] to go at least one year or more, if circumstances
will admit, to Lebanon Academy, to attend to such studies as Messrs.
Finis
Ewing, Ephraim
McLean, and Young Ewing, will direct, who are hereby appointed
a committee to superintend his education.
Resolved,
That for the purpose of educating Philip
McDaniel [sic: McDonnold], the ordained ministers present,
do mutually agree and bind themselves to collect or procure ten
dollars, and as much more as they can, for the above purpose,
and if there should be any more money raised than will be necessary,
it shall be applied to similar purposes by the direction of Presbytery;
one-half the money to be collected at least by our next Presbytery,
the balance by our next fall session.
WHEREAS, five dollars have been collected form
several elders now present, for the purpose of assisting in paying
the tuition of Philip
McDaniel [sic: McDonnold], Presbytery therefore orders
that such money, or whatever other moneys may be collected from
elders and brought forward, shall be put into the hands of the
committee appointed to the care of his tuition, and shall go proportionally
to lessen the sums the preachers are bound to procure.
WHEREAS, the Presbytery has seen a communication
from a committee appointed by the West Tennessee Presbytery to
some of our brethren, the object of which is said to be an adjustment
of our differences, therefore
Resolved,
That said brethren, to wit.; Messrs. Bell
and Porter,
are hereby authorized to inform said committee that this Presbytery
agree to meet, by a committee, a committee appointed by the West
Tennessee and Muhlenburg Presbyteries, conjointly, at any time
and place said Presbyteries will appoint, in order to confer on
the subject of reunion and other matters relative to that harmony
that should exist between the members and people of Jesus Christ.
Resolved, That individuals
contributing liberally to the purchase of books for the use of
the Cumberland Presbytery library, if God shall at any future
period call any of their children to the ministry in this Church,
they shall be entitled to their share in it, and the Presbytery
do hereby express their gratitude to each individual.

the Cumberland Presbytery library, and make report at our next
Presbytery.
Ordered, that Mr.
William Harris prepare a discourse, from Rom. v. 9, as
a trial discourse to be delivered at an intermediate Presbytery,
preparatory to his ordination the second Friday in February next,
in Dunham's settlement; and that said Harris
prepare to stand an examination upon the several branches of literature
pointed out in our circular letter.
Ordered,

Foster, be appointed to attend the ordination of Mr.
Harris, and that Mr.
Ewing preside, and Mr.
Calhoon preach the ordination sermon, and in case of Mr.
Ewing's absence, Mr.
McLean is directed to preside.
Ordered,
that the young men ride as they did, until the next Presbytery,
only that Mr.
Donnell ride the whole of his time on the Elk and Nashville
circuit, and Mr.
McLin on the Livingston circuit.
Presbytery
proceeded to examine Messrs. William
Barnett, David
McLin, and William
Bumpass on English Grammar and Divinity, which were unanimously
sustained, and Philip
McDaniel [sic: McDonnold] on English Grammar, which was
sustained.
On motion, resolved,
that Mr.
McLin's discourse, delivered at the opening of Presbytery,
be, and is hereby considered a popular discourse, in order to
licensure.
Presbytery adjourned
by prayer, to meet to-morrow morning at nine o'clock.
FRIDAY MORNING.
Presbytery met agreeably to adjournment.

William Barnett delivered a discourse from Rom. V, 9,
which was unanimously sustained as a popular discourse preparatory
to licensure.

15, which was unanimously sustained as a popular discourse preparatory
to licensure.

Mr.

Presbytery
requires their circuit riders to make a return of the moneys received
by them for their support at the next stated session for the present
year.
Ordered, that Mr.
Chapman prepare to stand an examination on English Grammar,
at the intermediate Presbytery.
The
Presbytery having examined Messrs. David
McLin, William
Barnett, and William
Bumpass, on the several parts of trial required by this
Presbytery to their satisfaction, and they having adopted the
Confession of Faith, agreeably to the requirement of Cumberland
Presbytery, Presbytery, therefore, did license them to preach
the gospel in the bounds of this Presbytery, or wherever God,
in his providence, may call them.

on English Grammar at our next stated Presbytery.
Mr.

which was sustained as part of trial.

Samuel Donnell prepare a discourse from John III, 16,
to be delivered at our next stated session.
Presbytery
orders that Mr.
McLin will attend a sacrament at Casey's Creek, the fourth
Sabbath of October.
Presbytery
adjourned by prayer, to meet at Suggs' Creek meeting-house, the
first Tuesday in April, 1812.
